Vanessa Blue

Born on May 27, 1974, in Long Beach, California, Vanessa Blue entered the adult industry in 1996 after a path that began with nude dancing while she was studying to become an emergency medical technician. A fellow dancer introduced her to fetish modeling, which led to her first adult film appearance alongside Ed Powers. After about a year of work, she left the industry for a three-year hiatus, relocating to Nebraska to be closer to family before returning in 2000.

Career and Studio Work

Upon her return, Vanessa established a long working relationship with Mercenary Pictures, where she performed and directed several series. She was also engaged to the company's owner, Lexington Steele. Her directing work on the Black Reign series earned her the 2005 AVN Award for Best Ethnic-Themed Series, making her the first African American woman to win an AVN Award as a director. Her dual roles in front of and behind the camera were notable for the period, and she reportedly held simultaneous performance and directing contracts with both Playboy TV and Hustler Video.

In 2008, Vanessa and Lexington Steele filed federal lawsuits against each other over ownership of videos originally released under the Mercenary Pictures label. The dispute was resolved in March 2009 through alternative dispute resolution. By April 2010, Vanessa had signed a distribution deal with Justin Slayer International for her directorial projects.

Television and Mainstream Appearances

Beyond adult film, Vanessa appeared on Playboy TV and hosted Private Calls and Night Calls on Playboy Radio until 2008. She also crossed into mainstream media with appearances in several films and magazines, including an interview with rapper 50 Cent published in Rolling Stone. She made a cameo in The Game's music video for "Wouldn't Get Far."

Later Career and Legacy

Vanessa briefly returned to performing in 2011 with a series of scenes for Brazzers before stepping back again. Her career spanned roughly 20 years, from 1996 to 2016. In 2003, she launched her own line of adult novelty products. She was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame in 2013, a recognition of her sustained presence in the industry across two decades as both a performer and director.
