Born Linda Ann Hopkins on July 25, 1976, in Great Falls, Montana, Tera Patrick spent much of her childhood moving between locations due to her father's service in the U.S. Army. Raised primarily in San Francisco by her British father and Thai mother, she is of mixed heritage. A period living in Tokyo during her youth preceded her entry into modeling at age 13, when she was scouted by Ford Models in New York. Before entering adult entertainment, she studied microbiology at Boise State University and obtained a nursing certification, working briefly in that field.

Tera's adult career began in 1999, at age 22, following a shoot for Penthouse magazine that led to her first hardcore film work. She used several aliases early on, including Brooke Thomas, Sadie Jordan, and Tera Hopkins. Over the following decade, she built a filmography exceeding 100 titles, working with studios such as Vivid, Digital Playground, Evil Angel, Hustler, Brazzers, Wicked Pictures, and Adam and Eve.
