Born Gina-Raye Carter on June 13, 1972, in Jamestown, North Carolina, Rayveness entered the adult industry around 1992 at approximately 20 years old. Of German, Irish, British, and Finnish descent, she was raised in High Point, North Carolina, and worked several jobs before making her way into adult film. Her early career began with Homegrown Video, and she initially performed only alongside her then-husband Red Bone and with female co-stars.

Early Career and Mainstream Detour

Through the 1990s, Rayveness built a steady body of work under various aliases, including Raveness and Ginger. Following her 1997 divorce from Red Bone, she expanded the scope of her on-screen work. Between 2000 and 2003, she stepped away from adult production to pursue mainstream acting. During this period, she altered her appearance and used her birth name or the alias Karen M. Swaim to avoid association with her adult career. She appeared in the HBO film Path to War (2002), playing Lynda Bird Johnson, and had a role on the ABC series NYPD Blue in 2001. The mainstream work did not develop into a sustained career, and she returned to adult film in 2003.
