Born Marie Louise Hartman on March 11, 1959, in Berkeley, California, Nina Hartley grew up in a politically active household, the youngest of four siblings. She graduated from San Francisco State University in 1985 with a nursing degree, earning magna cum laude honors. While still in college, she worked as a dancer in San Francisco's Sutter Street theaters, which led directly to her transition into adult film.
